Nearly 30 percent of Canadians planning a winter getaway this year say they are heading to Caribbean destinations to beat the winter blues.

Like many travelers, snowbirds — retirees who fly to warmer climes in winter — love to flock to a good deal. If you’re a snowbird on a budget, here are our recommended low-cost Caribbean destinations and things to do that will make your wallet stretch the most.

We consider standard cost of living, travel expenses and accommodation options in our suggestions of gorgeous Caribbean destinations for travelers on a budget.

St. Maarten is a beach lover’s paradise. Spending the day soaking up the sun is one of the best free activities Caribbean islands have to offer.

St. Maarten is also known as the “ Culinary Capital of the Caribbean.” If you’re a foodie who loves a good deal, time your visit to Maarten Flavors Culinary Month, when the island’s top restaurants serve multicourse meals at a deep discount.

One of the biggest cost savings tips for visiting the Caribbean is to go outside of the high season, when costs skyrocket. Try to time your visit to the low season, from June to November.

September and October will be the cheapest months, but this period comes with risks, due to it being hurricane season.

Also, research your specific destination for which type of accommodations may be best for travellers on a budget.

Some Caribbean islands, such as the Dominican Republic, are known for lower cost all-inclusive resorts, which can save you money by bundling food and hotel costs. But on other islands, a guest house, hostel or standard hotel may be the best value for money.

Travel insurance can be especially important for trips to the Caribbean. Hurricanes are active in this region, and can disrupt your travel plans, which could cost you thousands.

An Allianz Global Assistance Travel Insurance plan with trip cancellation benefits reimburses certain non-refundable expenses, up to the total cost of trip, if you must cancel due to a hurricane forecasted after you booked. See your policy for full details.

You should also know that your provincial or territorial health insurance plan may not fully protect you if you have a medical emergency abroad. An Allianz Global Assistance Travel Insurance plan with emergency medical benefits may help you fill coverage gaps if you experience a medical emergency during your trip to the Caribbean.

Allianz Global Assistance Travel Insurance plans also offer baggage protection, which reimburses certain non-refundable expenses if your luggage is lost, stolen or delayed. See your policy for full details.
